Attitudes and Beliefs Towards Different Cultures Informed Consent for Online Survey

Purpose of Study: Steven P. Verney, Ph.D., and doctoral student, Juan Peña, B.A. from the Department of Psychology are conducting a research study. The purpose of the research is to examine attitudes, beliefs and experiences about people from different backgrounds. You are being asked to participate in this study because you are a student here at the University of New Mexico and you expressed interest in participating. Approximately 300 University of New Mexico students will be recruited in this study.


Procedures: Your participation will involve reading some instructions, answering a few questions and completing a few tasks such as categorizing words and pictures into groups as fast as possible. You will complete this study online. The online survey should take approximately 50 minutes to complete. The survey includes questions such as demographics, including ethnicity, age, sex, educational status, parental educational status and nativity. Other questions include ethnic experiences, intercultural communication and distress during the past week. Your involvement in the study is voluntary, and you may choose not to participate. You can refuse to answer any of the questions at any time. In order to ensure that we give you research credit, your student ID would be associated with your responses, but will be kept separately from your responses.


Risks or discomforts: Risks in this study are minimal, but while completing the task or answering questions, some individuals may experience discomfort, psychological and or emotional distress due to previous experiences or encounters. In the unlikely event of a breach of privacy and/or confidentiality, there is also risk that participants may experience distress. Breach of privacy and confidentiality is unlikely given the precautions we will be taking to protect participants’ information. However, if at any point you feel that this study is too discomforting, you may terminate your participation and withdraw after or prior to completing the study. If you withdraw after completing the study, your data will be excluded and deleted.


Benefits: There are no direct benefits to you for your participation in this research. However, your participation will help provide information which may be beneficial to science and society. By participating in this study, you may learn new ways to understands other's attitudes and beliefs. This study may also help us understand what influences certain views and attitudes.


Confidentiality: All information obtained from this study will be kept confidential. Research records will be stored in a password protected website in password protected computers. These records will only be accessible to the researchers. The information acquired in this study may be used for publication or for scientific purposes.


Compensation:

After completing the study, you will be given one research credit. Unfortunately, if you withdraw, we are unable to give you credit for your participation.
