I've played around with <defaults> for a while but still cannot resolve this. For most of my pages I have black background but I noticed checkboxes text background is always white.

So I have created a separate block to change the background to white, which works beautifully when I run the block (line 155 - accent_block_end) alone. It also works nicely when the expt contains only this one block (line 104).

However, when I include the rest of my surveypages/blocks (in my script file, replace line 104 with line 108), I have a black box, then the white text background which looks awful.

What attributes have I possibly messed up?

Text and background color for certain survey question formats cannot be changed. This is due to limitations imposed by the operating system. As a rule of thumb, you need to go for black text on a light(er) background.
