Hi Dave,
I have launched a web study that works fine when the link is pasted into Google Chrome/Mozilla: http://research.millisecond.com/stevekelly/FullScript.web. However, when I click on the link it directs me to Internet Explorer (11) by default where it will not run. Instead I get a message saying 'object error' (the same happens on other computers I've tried). Do you know why this is? Alternatively, is there a way of getting Inquisit to open in another browser by default or is this simply dependent on my computer settings?
Thanks, Eimear

(1) When you click a link on a given system, it will open in the system's default browser. If the default browser is Internet Explorer, it'll open in Internet Explorer. If the system's default browser is Chrome, it'll open in Chrome (same for Firefox).

(2) I am unable to reproduce the error you observed in IE 11. The script is working fine for me using that browser (I just tested). If you are running Windows 8 or above, note that the operating system comes with essentially two different versions of Internet Explorer: A limited "app" version for the "modern" (formerly called "Metro") UI and the regular "full" version. Among other things, the "app" Internet Explorer does not support plugins or the like, i.e. you need to use the regular IE with Inquisit Web experiments.

OK, thanks for the info. I'm actually running Windows 7 (as are the other computers I tried it on) so maybe it is something to do with that. I will just make participants aware that they should copy the link into a different web browser if IE doesn't work for them.
Thanks, Eimear

If those are centrally managed machines, it's possible that your administrators locked down Internet Explorer via group policies.
I've tested your experiment with IE11 under Windows 7 and can at least say that it's working fine for me.
Hope this helps.

Yep, they were all university machines so I think you're right. It works fine on my home computer.
Thanks again!

Hi Eimear, Is there any chance of sharing a screen shot of the web page and associated error message? I don't know if you are planning to collect any data on those machines, but that particular error message suggests the problem may be fixable. Here are instructions for screen captures.

Hi Sean,
Sure, attached is a screenshot but I'm not sure how helpful it will be as it doesn't give any information aside from saying 'object error'. To clarify, when I click 'Start' I'm directed to the information sheet but it is when I then click 'I wish to proceed' that this message occurs. I'm not running this study on students so it doesn't affect me for now as long as it's just centrally managed machines that are affected like this. Sill, if you can see a way around it that would be great.
Thanks, Eimear

Hi Eimear, Thank you, this is very helpful, although unfortunately, it's helped me to rule out some possibilities, so we're still stuck with the problem.
I'm wondering if you could run a small test 1. Browse to the launch page in IE 2. Right-click anywhere on the page and select "Inspect Element" 3. Refresh the page 4. Let me know if you see any errors ore warnings in the console tab.
Alternatively, if you'd be willing to allow me to remote into that computer, I could run some tests myself. This would require temporarily installing some desktop sharing software on the machine and coordinating a time when I could access it.
Thanks, Sean

One other possibility - do you have any IE add-ons installed? If so, it's possible they are interfering. Apparently it's not uncommon for IE add-ons to interfere with the functioning of some web pages. It could also be overly aggressive anti-virus software such as Norton or McAfee.
Also, have you tried any of the links under "Having trouble starting?"

Hi Sean,
I followed the steps you suggested and a screenshot of the resulting text is below if any help.
Just checked the add-ons and there are a few, including McAfee. I tried to disable the add-on and check if the test worked but it doesn't seem to allow me. I never use IE so the other ones are all just whatever comes pre-installed but can give you a list if helpful. I also just tried the three options under the "Having trouble starting?" section and they all run fine so it's not a big deal, just the original way that has problems. I don't think it will affect us too much but happy to allow you remote in and try to figure it out.
Thanks, Eimear
