Issue with two-part session

https://forums.millisecond.com/Topic35054.aspx

By hsmartin - 12/23/2022

Hi! We just had a participant complete the first session of our batch script, which typically has two tasks/data files linked. Somehow, there was an issue that led her to only view/complete the first task/data file. We only have one active experiment allowed at a time, but we're wondering if there's a way to make up for this snafu by sending her a link that directly brings her to the second task in the session? Please let me know if this is confusing or if there is any other information I can provide that would help. One thing we tried was restarting the session and drawing the backward/mirrored Z to skip through the first task, but somehow she still was unable to view the second task after she skipped through the first ask. Thank you so much.

Best,
Heather

Please have the participant provide the log from the Inquisit app on their device to you and then please pass it on to me. To access the log, open the Inquisit app, go to the "Tests" tab, and click / tap "Log" in the upper right corner of the screen.

I've looked at what I believe to be the the data file from that attempt, and the data file indicates the command issued was the "abort the entire batch of scripts" command -- i.e. drawing a Z across the screen with two fingers, not the "abort just the currently running script" command -- drawing a backwards Z across the screen with two fingers.

That would explain why the 2nd task was not run in that instance.

Thanks so much for your quick response. That is the correct data file/attempt - is there any way to send the participant (subject ID 007) a link to that specific task rather than to that general session? I'm not able to easily find the participant to ask for the log info.

Not without making modifications to either the batch script(s) or the online study. Are you running any other participants concurrently or is the participant in question the only one who would access the study within, say, the next hour or so?

Then things should be straightforward. Go into your web experiment's settings and change the start script to be just that one task you need the participant to complete. I.e.

and then click "Save". Have them use the same link as before, it'll only launch the IAT script. Once the participant has successfully launched, you can switch the start script back to the main batch script.

Hi Dave,

Thank you so much - this is so incredibly helpful! I am a bit confused, because after I saved the IAT as the new start script, I asked the participant to use the link again. About two hours ago, I heard back from them that they re-tried it and completed it. On my end, I don't see any new IAT data saved under any of the sessions - it doesn't seem to appear in the participant log or in the data folder. Is it possible that somehow the data didn't save? It does look like the link was launched again.

Also, the participant (007) is automatically shown above my test (hmtest), which makes me think they did re-try the link recently. Is there anything that could account for this, or anywhere else I should be looking for the IAT data? Thank you so much again.

You don't need to guess whether the participant relaunched, you can see it right there in the logs if you expand the event timeline:

So yes they did relaunch shortly before 10PM (UTC). The license check is the first thing the app does. After that, there's been nothing more from the client device, no data upload or finishpage hit. Why? Could be several reasons: The device lost connectivity. Or the participant disabled automatic data file upload. Or the participant closed the app before it could upload data and/or redirect to the finish page.

In any case, if the participant did indeed complete the IAT, the data files reside on their device until such time they can be uploaded. I.e., the device needs to have internet connectivity and the Inquisit app must be running. Have the participant open the app on their device and go to the "Data" tab. Any not yet uploaded data files will be listed there. Have them double-check that the "Automatic Upload " box at the top is checked. They can also manually trigger the files' upload by tapping on the "Cloud Upload" button in the upper right corner on the "Data" tab.

They can also manually trigger the files' upload by tapping on the "Cloud Upload" button in the upper right corner on the "Data" tab.

That makes sense and is incredibly helpful! Thank you so much. Happy Holidays!!!

Heather

Thank you and Happy Holidays to you and yours as well!

Hi Dave,

Thanks so much again for your earlier help! I’m noticing that the issue the last participant experienced (the session ending prematurely) seems to be persisting. I’ve been testing it out myself, and I’v come across a variety of different outcomes when running sessions.

Sometimes, the session runs perfectly and uploads data at the end. Other times, I receive the following message right after clicking start: “Test ‘CBMI_March312022’ exited prematurely. Would you like to restart it?” In these cases, the session doesn’t even make it to the first slide of the session. Still other times, the session makes it through the first slide/task and then the app automatically closes (before showing the second task). When this happens, I’ve tried re-opening the app, and I again see the “exited prematurely” message.

I have also attached a screenshot of the participant log with my recent test attempts from this morning, and it shows some of the examples of possible outcomes I’ve seen. As you can see, sometimes the two-task sessions (session IDs 1 and 11) show both tasks (ex. hmtest4) but not the finish page, and other times the two-task sessions show only the first task and not the second (ex. hmtest5, hmtest11). Additionally, sometimes our single-task sessions don’t start properly (ex. hmtest8, hmtest14) and just show the “exited prematurely” message, while other times the single-task sessions work perfectly (ex. hmtest15).

Any thoughts on what might be causing this? I initially thought there was an issue with the last participant’s WiFi or the way they were completing sessions, but this seems to be a new issue that might occur for new participants. These issues haven't before come up for me or any of our previous participants. Any help is greatly appreciated! Thank you so much.

Please let me know if there is any other information I can provide that would help. I have also double-checked to make sure that Automatic Upload is checked on the Inquisit app.

Best,
Heather

Are you seeing this primarily on iOS devices (iPhones or iPads) -- it looks that way from the screenshot you attached, but wanted to confirm just to be sure,

If so, it's likely a problem with the recently released update (6.6.2, about a week ago), which is iOS-only and adressed some compatibility-breaking changes Apple introduced in iOS 16 (basically, they completely changed and broke the way screen orientation detection and locking in a specific orientation works, the latter of which is particularly important for Inquisit, which needs oritentation to remain locked in for an entire task or set of tasks).Unfortunately, it seems the fix is causing sporadic problems on some devices (primarily those running iOS 15 or below, but also some iOS 16), causing an interface-orientation related crash. We're triaging the issue and will provide an update as soon as possible. Depending on how quickly we can do that, we might roll the version available in the App Store back to 6.6.1 in the meantime, though this will have the drawback of not working properly under iOS 16.

P.S.: If you could send me the log file from your device (open the app, go the the "Data" tab, tap "Log" in the upper right corner) at support<at>millisecond.com, that would help use confirm or disconfirm whether the issue you've been seeing in your tests is the one described above.

Thank you so much for your speedy reply. Yes, the issue has so far only come up on iOS devices (specifically iOS 15 and 16). Now that you mention it, there actually were also some issues with the orientation when I tested it this morning - a few times, the slides opened in portrait format rather than landscape format. Additionally, I'm looking at the log and noticing that the issues we've experienced do seem to coincide with the switch from 6.6.1 to 6.6.2. This is all incredibly helpful - we may consider pausing enrollment for a bit or trying out non-iOS devices, and we'll keep an eye out for an update. Thank you so much again - we really appreciate it!

Yes, that sounds exactly like the issue caused by the changes Apple introduced in iOS 16 vs. iOS 15. Still having the app's device log to confirm would be great. In theory, the specific error should have been captured in there.

Sounds great! I still don't have the participant's Inquisit log, but I have my own, which I'll attach. It says the ".log" upload to the forum isn't supported, but I've exported it to a pdf. Thank you so much again!

Thank you very much for the log. I'll be deleting the post with the attachment, since the log can contain potentially sensitive data (e.g. the device's IP address).

We've submitted 6.6.3, which should hopefully resolve these issues for good, to the Apple App Store at the end of last week. As far as I can see, it should be approved and available publicly in the App Store by now.
