Dear all,
we are currently preparing a test battery to be used in group settings with children. We have previously used Inquisit 6 successfully and are now switching to Inquisit 7.
So far, everything is running (though we will still have to test some things), but we are having one issue: as soon as we are connecting headphones (no bluetooth headphones) with the tablets, there is no sound output through the headphones.
This worked well with Inquisit 6 though.
Any idea on how to solve this issue?
Here is a link to our test script: https://mili2nd.eu/sfjc
Thanks in advance,
pinguin

Try connecting headphones before you launch and check that volume isn't set to minimum or entirely muted.

Dear Dave,
that's what I thought, but it seems to be more complicated.
In the meantime, we have verified that the problem occurs on several independent Samsung tablets, but not on an iPad.
Interestingly, however, this is not the case when we use the Inquisit 6 app. It seems as if it was specific to the IQ7/Samsung combination.
And yes, we checked that the sound was not set to minimum or entirely muted. When in the settings of the Samsung tablet, one is able to probe a sound - and this sound is hearable through the headphones.
Any other idea?
Here are two IQ7 batteries, with no sound on the Samsung (through wired headphones): https://mili2nd.eu/fgjc https://mili2nd.eu/xfjc
Here is a IQ6 battery, with sound on the Samsung (through wired headphones): https://mili2nd.eu/mric

You may want to double-check these. I've tested the batteries on a Samsung phone (don't have a Samsung tablet handy), and sound over wired headphones works fine. We haven't had any other reports about sound over headphones not working either.
Beyond that: What are the specific tablet models? What's the Android buil on these? Is the software / OS up to date (i.e. all vendor updates installed)? 3-5 mm audio jack or using a USB-C connector?

Thank you for the tip with the Separate App Sound setting. I have set it for the Inquisit 7 App to „Tablet“ (it was unspecified before), but it is still not working. Also rebooted the tablet afterwards.
Samsung Galaxy Tab A7 Model Number: SM-T500
Software: Android 12 T500XXS8CXG1 According to the tablet (and the information available online), we have the latest software version installed. Using a 3.5mm audio jack.
Best,

I've also reset the settings.
When I continously disconnect and connect the headphones, I will hear sound through them for a fraction of a second, before the tablet switches back to the speakers.

Two more things I can think of: - Settings -> Apps -> Reset app preferences. - Connect headphones, reboot device with headphones plugged in. Check if audio is routed through headphones after reboot.

Dear Dave,
unfortunately, no. Both ideas do not resolve the issue.
Tomorrow I will try to reset the entire tablet, but hope that this is not the „fix“. We have 85 tablets.
Best,

P.S.: The system sounds are hearable through the headphones - before and after rebooting.

+xP.S.: The system sounds are hearable through the headphones - before and after rebooting. Strange issue. As I said, it's not readily reproducible on the Android devices I have available, including some Samsungs, albeit different models. No similar reports from others either so far.
Let me know if the device reset changes anything.

Dear Dave,
a complete device reset did not do the trick. Still the same issue.
I additionally made this observation: when I adjust the volume during playback within the Inquisit 7 app on my Samsung tablet using headphones, the tablet changes the "system" volume instead of the "media" volume. However, if I run the same test without headphones connected, the volume buttons correctly adjust the "media" volume during playback. Could it be that Inquisit 7's audio via Samsung tablet is not routed through the standard media channel when headphones are connected?
Best,
pinguin

Best, pinguin Inquisit uses the media channel, but for some reason the media channel doesn't appear to be routed through the wired headphones on those tablets, but remains routed through the speakers. Android 12 introduced some major changes to audio routing, but the app in principle supports and adheres to those specifications. It's possible this comes down to some custom stuff Samsung did in that Android 12 distro that breaks the expected behavior. Conferring with our lead Android dev about this and see if we can find a device where this is reproducible and whether we can deploy a workaround. I will update this thread once I know more.

Thank you - this would be much appreciated!
If by any chance we will find a solution ourselves, we will also get back to you here.

Hi Dave,
a tiny update: when we use USB-C to 3.5mm jack adapters, the sound will be output through the headphones.
Maybe this information is important to know for the developers.
