Compatibility with current Android versions

Dear all,

I'm getting feedback from users that some (mobile phone-based) participants can no longer install Inquisit 6 from the Google Play App store. They receive the error message that the app was developed for an older version of Android. Is this expected behavior? Is there any known workaround or are there plans to update Inquisit 6 for longevity?

Appreciate any info!

OK, thanks for the info! Sideloading might not be completely viable for this case, as participants are asked to install the app on their own phone and might either not care to follow more complicated instructions or not trust the researcher enough. I'll let the user know and cross my fingers that you can get an update through without too much hassle. Good luck and thanks

It is expected behavior, in that it's Google's policy:

"Existing apps must target Android 14 (API level 34) or higher to remain available to new users on devices running Android OS higher than your app’s target API level. Apps that target Android 13 (API level 33) or lower, including Android 12 (API level 31) or lower for Wear OS and Android TV, will only be available on devices running Android OS that are the same or lower than your apps’ target API level."

The target API level of the Inquisit 6 app is 33. While the app works fine under newer Android versions according to our tests, Google simply won't allow installation via the Play Store as a consequence of the nominal API level.
We're looking into whether publishing an update is possible, but that is complicated by other changes Google requires for apps, including updates of old / existing apps, such as 16KB memory page support (cf. https://developer.android.com/guide/practices/page-sizes ).

In the meanitme, sideloading the APK (available at https://www.millisecond.com/download/inquisitweb6 or via any Inquisit 6 launch page) should work on most devices.
