Hi,
I have a multi-block script and for one of the blocks (which contains open-ended trial elements) I am unable to set the screen color to black - I have the line of script in there, but it just comes up white when the experiment runs. As a workaround, I added a completely black .jpg and set it as the background stimulus for that block, but that line of script also has no effect and the screen remains white for that block. In addition, I have an errormessage set to appear for two seconds when participants respond incorrectly and this doesn't happen. I have set the errormessage attribute at both the trial (openended) and block level, but no error message is appearing.
Any ideas?
I have pasted the fill script below - the problematic block is the one called "maths".
Thanks.
<page intro>
Thank-you for deciding to participate in this study.^^
Press the space bar to begin.
</page>
<page intro2>
On the following page you will be presented with a brief passage to read.^^
Please take your time to read this passage carefully. We will ask you about it later.^^
Press the space bar to continue.
</page>
<page maths1>
Now we would like you to do some maths problems, involving simple addition and subtraction.^^
For each problem, you will first see the question appear on the screen.^
It will remain on the screen for 10 seconds, after which the answer will then be displayed.^^
But if you press the space bar during this 10s period, the answer will not be displayed.^
Instead, a box allowing you to type in the answer will appear and you will then be able to answer the question.^^
After pressing the space bar you will have as long as you like to answer the question.^^
Press the space bar for further instructions...
</page>
<page maths2>
We would like you to press the space bar before the 10 seconds passes for all of the questions.^
We don't want you to wait for the answer to be displayed for any of the questions.^^
If you work out the answer yourself it will give us a much better indicator of your arithmetic ability.^^
We won't know whether you have pressed the space bar or just waited for the answer for any given maths problem.^^
So please try to answer each question yourself.^^
You will only be able to progress past each question once you have answered it correctly.^^
Press the space bar when you are ready to begin.
</page>
<page cheating>
On the following pages you will be presented with brief descriptions of hypothetical scenarios.^^
For each one, please indicate what you think you would do, should you find yourself in that situation.^^
Press the space bar to continue.
</page>
<page punishment>
On the following pages you will be presented with brief descriptions of acts.^^
For each one, please decide the level of punishment that you think would be appropriate.^^
Press the space bar to continue.
</page>
<page debrief1>
Thank you very much for your participation in this research project.^
For your interest, the purpose of the project will now be revealed.^^
This study aims to investigate the effects of altering people's beliefs in free will.^
In past research, negative effects have been found, including an increase in cheating and anti-social behaviour.^
What we realised was that the language used in these studies, when describing the non-existence of free will, was^
very gloomy and fatalistic.^^
The present study sought to examine whether using more positive language would change the effects found in the previous research.^^
Press the space bar to continue.
</page>
<page debrief2>
It should be pointed out that the question of the existence of free will is still being debated, both within science and^
philosophy and no consensus has been reached as yet.^^
In the study that you have just completed, you were asked to complete a mathematics test- this was the cheating test.^
We would like you to remember that this study is anonymous (there is no way for us to know who cheated and who didn't).^
The test itself was designed to make participants cheat, so there is no need for concern if you did cheat, that majority^
of participants will have cheated to various extents. The way that we measured cheating behaviour was that we recorded the^
touching of the space bar to uncover the answers.^^
The same strict anonymity that applied to the cheating test of course also applies to the rest of your responses.^^
Should you have any further questions about this research, please fee free to contact Ari Schlesinger at ariart777@gmail.com^^
Thank you again for your time and participation.^^
Press the space bar to close this window and submit your data.
