Hi There,

I have had the following error messgae sent to me by a participant:

Thought I'd give you a full description of how a crash would look like in Chrome (Version 29.0.1547.76 m)...

When clicking the start button, I get an immediate download of inquisit.jnlf which is the Java 7 network load file.

Once it has downloaded (new copy of the same file everytime.....!!! you need to run it to get the runtime environment started. The runtime window (the black one with the white box) will open alright but then hang, so the spacebar won't work.

When I check task manager, Javaw.exe is taking up between 46-50% of the CPU power...

The only way dealing with this is to kill the process, which eventually happen, generating an Inquisit error message in the Chrome window as per below:

Inquisit encountered errors while parsing the following script:

Script Url:http://www.millisecond.com/myaccount/scripts/gfrize/RINLAVersion1/RINLAVersion1.iqx

DirectX Error E_ACCESSDENIED (ffffffff80070005): Access is denied. Line 231, File win\DeviceInput.cpp

Direct2D Error: 0xffffffff8899000c A presentation error has occurred that may be recoverable. The caller needs to re-create the render target then attempt to render the frame again. Line 565, File win\Direct2DGraphics.cpp

Direct2D Error: 0xffffffff8899000c A presentation error has occurred that may be recoverable. The caller needs to re-create the render target then attempt to render the frame again. Line 565, File win\Direct2DGraphics.cpp

I wonder can you advise? I'm not sure what going wrong, and it runs on my machine.

Unfortunately that error message isn't very useful -- it only partly (if at all) relates to the actual problem (can't advance via spacebar), plus if you kill Inquisit / Java via task manager, of course it's going to throw some kind of error.

The high CPU load is not an issue, that's actually intended to give Inquisit the necessary resources for accurate timing etc. and avoid interference from other processes.

I'm not able to repro this on my machine either -- works as expected. You might want to have the person in question try a different launch method (e.g FF/Chrome plugin instead of Java) and/or browse, in case the Java environment on that machine is somehow botched.

One other thought: It is conceivable that the Inquisit / Java process is not properly fronted if the person did some other stuff on their machine while things were loading. In such a case, ALT-TAB'ing to the Inquisit window should work and enable it to take input.
