Re. #1: Every time someone visits the launch page or refreshes it, a new (subject- or group-) number will be returned. Someone visiting the page but deciding *not* to participate at this moment will thus cause a "gap" such as those you observed. The only way to avoid this presently would be to explicitly assign your participants to a given condition (id) and pass that info in via URL query parameters.

Re. #2: Is impossible to answer with certainty. The participant might have mistakenly started the experiment twice. There have been some (rare) instances of double-executions in the past (e.g. https://www.millisecond.com/forums/Topic12943.aspx ), but this should not happen with the latest Inquisit web version.

Re. #3: This is impossible to answer without further details. The data files might offer some hints as to where exactly freezing (if any) occurred and what it may be related to. In general, such instances should be rare. However, there's always a chance you'll encounter some subset of systems in the wild with issues (running outdated and/or broken software or drivers, badly maintained) -- there's no way to avoid this, unfortunately. I should also note that -- sometimes -- people simply misunderstand what they are supposed to do in a given task (e.g. misread the instructions, mixed up the response keys, etc.) and may mistakenly believe the task "froze" when it actually did not. I'm not saying that's what happened here, just pointing it out as another option to consider.

Re. #4: For all intents and purposes this sounds like a data merging issue (I do not know how you merged the data and if all files had the identical format), whereas the value for the 'date' field ended up in the 'response' field. This may happen if you altered the data recording at some point (adding or removing columns), causing some files to have a different structure (fewer or more columns) than others.

Hope this helps.

Hi.  I  ran a study using Inquisit web and experienced a few problems I was hoping some-one could explain to me, including any possible solutions, as I will be re-running it shortly.  My study consisted of a number of tasks, some survey style questions (e.g. attitude) and other reaction time tasks (e.g. the SC-IAT).

1.  I randomised the study (2 orders) and while the resulting odd/even subject numbers did match the different orders of tests programmed, the subject numbers allocated did not appear to be entirely sequential and did not go odd, even, odd, even etc.  For example, instead of allocating subjects numbers as per 1,2,3,4 they would go 5, 15, 18, 19 etc. so that you could not ensure even subject numbers for both test orders. Is there a way of ensuring that the data collection occurs odd/even/odd/even etc ? Why are the numbers allocated in this way?

2. I also had a problem with subjects being allocated the same number although the tests were completed at different times (the same date) and the data was different. I assume it was a different entry (as versus one person stopping and starting different versions of the tests) as the times for the tasks undertaken actually overlapped.  Why did this occur?

3.  I had a number of participants not complete the tests.  While this may be partially due to drop-out, a number of participants reported that their computers froze during testing (I think this occurred during the reaction time tests) so I assume a number of these failed completions were due to this problem. Is there a way to avoid this?

4. I had a few strange data entries.  For example, instead of a number in response to volume of chocolate eaten, I got "1-Feb" for two subjects - does anyone know what that means or why that would occur? As 1 was a possible answer, is this what the data was meant to be?

Thanks,

Rebecca
