Could you clarify one more point? Given the syntax, if the P makes a response within the 950 ms period following the onset of the target stimulus, does the trial immediately end, or does it wait the full 950 ms before ending

Upon response, the trial immediately enters its 250ms posttrialpause.

Given the syntax, could you clarify how long Ps have to make a response? That would be useful.

the 2200ms /timeout starts ticking with the start of the pretrialpause. So you have 250ms pretrialpause + 1000ms into the stimulus presentation sequence when the trial starts accepting responses per your /responsetime.

That means participants will have 950ms to give a response.

2200 - 250 - 1000 = 950.

Am I right that in the syntax pasted below, a trial starts with a 250 ms pretrial pause, a fixation cross (1000 ms), target photo (200 ms), which is replaced by a blank screen.
Participants are able to make a response starting at 1000 ms (immediately when the target photo is presented).
If a P makes a response, then there is a 250 ms post trial pause, and the new trial begins. If a P does not make a response, then Inquisit waits for 2200 ms after the response was allowed (1000 ms) and terminates the trial. (Note in the Inquisit documentation, I found that for timeout “the duration begins as soon as Inquisit begins waiting for a response (by default, this is at the end of the stimulus presentation sequence.”

No. that's not right. See https://www.millisecond.com/support/docs/v3/html/howto/howtocontroltiming.htm

/timeout=2200 is a different thing than /response = timeout(2200)
