Hello, I'd like to report that in last week my research failed because Inquisit Web crashed many times on different machines. Usually I send people a link and they do task (surveys etc.) at home or at work. I listed the problems below: 1. Survey button to move forward doesn't respond. 2. During procedure computer automatically resets itself. Why? 3. Application hangs. Why it could happen? What is wrong with Inquisit? Or it's a problem of a plug-in? 4. Avast and a few antivirus apps find some problems: (1) object: 46.185.68.95:135/tcp, (2) activity: DCOM Exploit. Is there any way to provide secure connection and silence antiviruses? Do you consider to make possible that Inquisit Web could start without the need to install a plug-in? Many people do not want to install this because they are afraid of losing a control over computer. What plug-in is better? What internet browser is better to run experiments? Which Inquisit Web version is more stable: 3.0.6.0 or 3.0.4.0. My university has 3 perpetual web licenses and we think it would be great if we could work using reliable software. Kind regards, Jacek

For compatibility with current browsers you need to use the *latest* available version (3.0.6.0 at the time of writing). Older versions may crash, hang or not take any input due to massive changes in how current browsers handle plugins. Also see https://www.millisecond.com/products/Inquisit3/releasenotes.aspx. Dave, I used to run the latest version. All the problems I described appeared with 3.0.6.0. Do you have any idea why it crashed? J

Without any more specific information regarding the circumstances of the crashes and the technical specs of the involved systems (hard- and software), no, unfortunately. Personally, I haven't seen a single web edition crash in ages on any of my systems.

Dave, I have the same experience, i.e., no problems on my machines, problems on machines owned by other people. What kind of specifics do you require to tell more about a crash of Inquisit Web? J

- OS version - Browser version - Launch method used - JRE version if the Java launcher was used - Graphics card type and driver version - anything that might be special about the system in question, e.g., a particular type of AV, any software that hooks into the display system running concurrently, etc. - The exact error messages and so on. Note that you'll always encounter systems in the wild that are in really bad shape (maintenance-wise) and may have any number of issues not caused by, but affecting Inquisit. People's JRE, for example, is often severely outdated. Regards, ~Dave

FWIW, since you mentioned Avast in your initial query: The virtual drivers installed by the latest version (7.x) of said product apparently cause boatloads of issues and BSODs (just do a Google search or browse through their support forums). I would not be surprised of those were responsible for the problems your participants have been reporting. Regards, ~Dave

Hello, i'm using Inquisit 4 web edition. My experiment runs perfectly on my computer. But Mac users have many problems, since i use many pictures it taks some time till the experiment is loaded. the diferent pictures are not bigger than 30 KB. Mac users reported me that it either takes enourmous time or more often the computer crashes while loading, without any error messages... It might be a problem of the browser? Which browser do you recommend? THANk you very much for your support regards Antonia

There'll be an update to the Inquisit 4 beta version hopefully out soon that should significantly improve Mac compatibility and stability. With the current beta version, there really isn't much you can do on your end to amend the issues you reported.
