Thanks for the report. It would be great if you could clarify

(1) which exact BART script you are referring to (there are several), and
(2) whether the Inquisit installation on the affected computer is up-to-date. If it is not, please update the most recent version and check if the issue persists.

Are you running on a Mac by chance? We've had some issues playing the BART sound files on Mac in previous releases, so make sure you've got the latest release of Inquisit, which is 4.0.6 (you can see the version number from the About Inquisit command on the Apple menu).

If this is happening with 4.0.6, let us know.

Hi all,

I just downloaded both the task and Inquisit on Monday, so it is the most updated version. I am running it on an ancient Dell, however, using Windows XP. The BART script is the standard (not for Youth or Automatic) Inquisit 4 version last updated on July 8, 2014.

Hmm, I cannot seem to reproduce this, but that may be due to the fact that my test system is not as ancient as & probably a little more powerful than your particular Dell machine. You've mentioned previously that the system is not connected to the internet, so I assume it has not received any Windows updates for a while? That could be an issue, too.

Could you run the script until it crashes and then attach (a) the crash report (if any exists) from the Windows event logs and (b) Inquisit's log file (Tools -> View Log File...) to this thread? Those might provide some clues. If I were to venture a guess, my bet would be on the system running out of resources (e.g. memory) after a while into the script, thus triggering a crash.

The general system specs (RAM, processor, graphics card) might also be good to know.

I ran the program and, for some reason, had a balloon that made it to 70 pumps and popped regularly, followed by 4 smaller balloons and then the standard 70-pumps-and-crash. I've attached the Inquisit.log file and the Windows event file, hope that helps. The machine is a Dell Latitude D630, 2.49 GHz, 2GB of Ram.

Awesome, thanks, I've managed to reproduce the crash (at pump 80) on a Windows XP test machine, so we should be able to identify and fix the bug for 4.0.7, which isn't too far from release. I'll post an update here when it's available.

The above excerpt from the Inquisit log might indicate an issue with the system's graphics card and/or DirectX setup. Can you try getting the latest graphics card drivers and check if the issue persists after updating? I would recommend doing the same for DirectX.

Also, what type of graphics card how much graphics memory does that machine have? Thanks!

That's definitely a clue, but the problem was an Inquisit rounding error as the balloon image starts going offscreen (pump #82 on my system). It affects Windows XP.

This will be fixed in 4.0.7, the next update.

Awesome! Thank you so much for your help. Will a new graphics card be necessary even with the update? We're short on funding so I'm stuck with this laptop for the moment (and given I can't connect to the internet with it due to network security concerns I can't do any standard updates either). Here's hoping it will be usable!
